Dr Peter Baker, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) – Gone in 60 Microseconds: The Muon’s Journey from Mistaken Identity to Tool of the Sciences
The muon is a fundamental particle rather like the electron, but 200 times heavier. This talk will describe its convoluted history, what we now know about the muon, and some of the wide range of discoveries it has helped to make from particle physics to pyramids, frustration to fusion
Dr Peter Baker has worked as an muon scientist at the ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the past 10 years. Before that he studied and did research in the physics department at the University of Oxford. His research has mostly covered magnets, superconductors, and batteries, almost always using antimuons. He is also the secretary of the International Society for Muon Spectroscopy.
