Dr Margarida Ruas – Breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s treatment: a path to hope and progress

Dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease as its leading cause, is the leading cause of death in the UK. Significant efforts have been made to understand its underlying mechanisms, leading to numerous therapeutic trials. In the past two years, we have witnessed a breakthrough with the approval of drugs that target the disease’s root cause rather than merely alleviating symptoms. While this marks a long-awaited step forward, it also highlights the urgent need for improved early diagnosis and the development of more effective treatment strategies that could transform millions of lives.

Margarida received her PhD from Imperial College London, where she conducted cancer research at the CRUK LIF Institute. She then continued her work in the field with a postdoctoral research position at the John Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge.

Since 2002, her research has focused on understanding how cells break down and recycle materials, working at the Department of Pharmacology in Oxford. During this time, she was a Junior Research Fellow in Biochemistry at New College, Oxford.

In 2021, Margarida joined the Oxford Drug Discovery Institute, supported by Alzheimer’s Research UK, to lead a team studying how disruptions in these recycling processes contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Their goal is to identify new drug targets and advance early-stage treatments that could help combat conditions like Alzheimer’s.
