Developing New Tests for Cancer Using Single Molecule Imaging and Artificial Intelligence
Dr Benjamin Davis is a machine learning scientist and senior scientific software developer at the STFC Central Laser Facility, Harwell Campus. He is working in a team developing novel single molecule imaging technologies to better understand the behaviour of cells at the molecular level and, together with the use of recent developments in artificial intelligence, establish novel diagnostic tests for cancer.
Ben studied a BSc in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry followed by a PhD in Molecular Biophysics at the University of Nottingham, where his thesis explored bacterial chemical communication systems and their interactions with human hosts. He then spent the next eight years in postdoctoral research at University College and Imperial College London, working on a range of projects including nanotechnology based drug delivery systems, understanding methods of anaesthetic activity and developing diagnostics for neurodegenerative diseases using the eye as a window to the brain. During this time he became interested in image analysis, the spatial statistics of cell populations and automation methods and translate scientific discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic.
