Flying High as an Atmospheric Scientist
My talk will focus on my NERC work on the Met. Office Research Flight. I will cover some of the varied research work which we undertook on the aircraft, contributing to the Kyoto protocol negotiations and other cloud physics and atmospheric chemistry work, including a flight through the 1999 solar eclipse! I will also cover some of the fun and challenges, dingy drill training and taking the aircraft down to 50’ over the ocean.
I was born in the UK but grew up in the USA and Canada, undertaking my university training in Northern Ontario. I did a PhD in Experimental Space Science at York University in Toronto. I returned to the UK in 1988 taking up a post-Doc position at the UKAEA Harwell Laboratory.
I joined the Natural Environment Research Council in 1992, as their Scientific Liaison with the Met. Research Flight. I spend the next Decade studying atmospheric and cloud physics in the air on a Hercules Aircraft.
During my time with NERC, I also managed the Remote Sensing Facility aircraft and its associated large data system. After my aircraft work, I consolidated my experience managing large and small scientific facilities, Atmospheric, Polar and e-Science programmes.
I moved to the Rutherford Appleton Lab in 2005 to manage the e-Science big data portfolio. And for the last 10 years of my career, I managed the user programmes for the ISIS neutron spallation source and the Central laser Facilities. Co-ordinating 4000 scientific visits to the Lab annually. Retiring in 2022.
