November – Richard Bull ‘Radiation-Hazards & Benefits’

17th November 2020 @ 11:46 pm

Tuesday 17th November – Richard Bull, ‘Radiation-Hazards & Benefits’

If you would like to receive joining instructions for this online talk – please email cafesci@didcotfirst.org

Introduction to radioactivity and radiation, explaining some of the terms like half-life and radiation dose that are frequently used. I’ll describe how radiation interacts with living tissue—how it causes harm and how it can be used beneficially, for example in radiotherapy. Finally, I’ll describe the most high-profile case of radiation over-exposure of recent times—the Litvinenko case.

Richard got his BSc, MSc & PhD degrees from the physics department, University of Birmingham.  He worked for the Nuclear Power Company, Leicester, on operator exposure estimates for the Sizewell PWR and then worked at AWE Aldermaston, on atmospheric dispersion modelling. Since 1983  Richard has been based at Harwell, initially for the UKAEA and more recently for Nuvia Limited. He works mainly on internal dosimetry, assessing internal doses for workers at Harwell, Culham and Capenhurst. Since 2017 he has been involved in the Mayak workers dosimetry programme.
