Some ten thousand years ago mankind started to cultivate and modify grasses to produce cereal crops and move from a hunter gatherer existence. This was the first agricultural revolution. Improvements with the creation of farms and breeding livestock continued over tens of thousands of years. The second agricultural revolution started in about 1750 with creation of crop rotation, fertilisers and the selective breeding of animals, this lasted about 1900. The third agricultural was the research and production of high yield foodstuffs – particularly wheat and rice – and mass agriculture.
Ian Adsley is a retired nuclear research and development scientist and is now one of the hosts at the Didcot Café Sci.
