At the end of 2005 Didcot was on a high - the Orchard Centre had opened during the summer (thanks to SODC's planning and funding) and Didcot Town had won the FA Vase.

After years in the doldrums, what could be done to help keep the positive momentum going?

Encouraged by Alison Adams, Di Chesterman and David Pryor key people in the town came together and, with the help of our MP, Ed Vaizey, formed a new organisation 'Didcot First' with the aim of promoting Didcot positively, to itself and to others. The official launch was on 17th November 2006 and in May 2007 Didcot First became a not-for-profit organisation and a Company Limited by Guarantee.

We have had year-on-year funding from many of the major businesses in the area, who each provide a Director for our Board.

Some of our most successful events and activities have included:

The annual Business and Community Awards - now in its 10th year.

Cafe Scientifique - a monthly talk and discussion on a specific scientific topic - still running on the 3rd Tues of the month.

The Love Clothes Show - which challenged public perceptions of charity shops.

Street Olympix - Getting everyone up and active.

Community Matters - a series of regular lunch meetings for community groups to network.

Focus Groups - we have hosted various focus groups, results from which have been passed on to further influence local development.

Clubs and Societies Days - now run in partnership and called Didcot: Get on Board.

Listings - a monthly round up of forthcoming activities in the local area published as a poster and circulated on email.

Christmas Shopping Passport - encouraging local shopping for goods and services.
