Professor Christopher Howe – “The Good, the Bad, and the Algae”
Many people think of algae as bad, clogging up ponds or forming toxic growths in lakes and reservoirs. In fact, they are very useful, and I’ll describe how they contribute to a wide range of domestic items, from blancmange to toothpaste. In the last few years, there has been a lot of interest in using algae to make environmentally friendly biofuels. I’ll discuss the feasibility of that and then describe work in my own lab using algae to generate electricity directly and power small devices.
Professor Christopher Howe, Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge
Chris Howe is Professor of Plant and Microbial Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. His research group studies the biochemistry and evolution of photosynthesis, as well as its biotechnological applications, particularly in the fields of renewable energy generation and waste remediation. He also studies the application of methods from evolutionary biology to non-biological systems, such as the copying history of medieval manuscripts, which are subject to many of the same principles as genes and DNA. He has spent his academic career in Cambridge and is also a Fellow and President of Corpus Christi College.
